Biography
I, Andrew S. McCullough, received an MA TESOL degree from the University of Northern Iowa. Before coming to MSU in 1992, I taught EFL for four years at the U.S. Binational Center in Medellín, Colombia, also serving as Director of Curriculum for three years, then taught ESL for two years at LCP International in Glendora, CA. At MSU, I pursued a doctorate in applied linguistics but discarded that journey after becoming a full time member of the English Language Center (ELC).
Pre-pandemic, I taught all ESL skills at the ELC, with a focus on academic writing. I have served as a testing coordinator, a special program coordinator, and the ELC Writing Lab coordinator (no longer funded), as well as a TA mentor. I have served my profession through participation in TESOL, and served on the MITESOL Board for several years, including as the 2016 president. Post-pandemic, I created and taught IAH 209 (A History of Advertising) and IAH 231 (The Promises of Education), along with ESL classes at the ELC summer sessions. I have also served on the IAH Advisory Committee.
Outside MSU, I participate regularly in Toastmasters International, especially in my home club, Capital City Toastmasters, where I have served in many officer roles, especially as President for a cumulative (only sometimes sequential) eight to twelve years. I have also held roles within Toastmasters District 62, which covers most of Michigan. Toastmasters is a public speaking, personal development and leadership training organization which I joined in 2004.
I am now a widower (my lovely Paulina departed this life in February 2026) with three grown children and three grandchildren. I also have a brother and family members scattered across Michigan and elsewhere. I am fortunate to have numerous friends here in the greater Lansing area (of course including MSU), as well as in Iowa, where I grew up, and around the world. I greatly enjoy my family, and activities like bicycling, reading, writing, public speaking, attending concerts, theater-going, watching movies, and time with friends. I hope to continue on at MSU for the foreseeable future, while I also pursue lifelong interests in NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming – not natural language processing) and hypnotherapy. Life has been good to me, and I proud and pleased to be a 2nd generation Spartan!
