Ho-Hsin Huang

Biography

Ho-Hsin Huang is Assistant Professor of Chinese Linguistics and Coordinator of the Chinese Program at Michigan State University. She holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics from Michigan State University and an Ed.M. in Language Education from Rutgers University.

Her research focuses on Chinese phonology, with a particular interest in how sound systems interact through loanword adaptation. She also investigates speakers’ perception and production in second language acquisition. In addition, she examines the role of digital tools and handwriting in learning the Chinese language. Her current project explores how English loanwords are adapted into Mandarin, highlighting the interaction between linguistic mechanisms and learner perception.

At MSU, Dr. Huang teaches courses across all levels of Chinese language, as well as classes in Chinese linguistics and Chinese calligraphy. She is passionate about guiding students to build strong language proficiency while deepening their appreciation of Chinese culture. As program coordinator, she has led initiatives in curriculum development, student recruitment, and cultural programming.

Beyond her professional roles, Dr. Huang enjoys mentoring international teaching assistants, supporting study abroad programs, and exploring creative pursuits. She has a long-standing personal interest in Chinese calligraphy and has recently taken up learning the violin, both of which she finds deeply rewarding. She values bringing the same spirit of curiosity and perseverance she encourages in her students to her own lifelong learning.
