Biography

Hello, my name is Nicola “Nic” Artese. I am Deaf, and American Sign Language (ASL) is my native language. I am passionate about expanding access, supporting interpreter development, and strengthening partnerships between Deaf communities and hearing professionals.

Current Roles & Work:

  • ASL Instructor at Michigan State University (MSU) and Oakland University (OU), where I teach introductory and intermediate ASL courses.

  • Interpreter Coordinator with Bromberg & Associates, supporting Video Remote Interpreting (VRI), On-Site Interpreting (OSI), and scheduling for a wide range of clients.

Areas of Expertise:

  • Deaf language education and ASL linguistics

  • Interpreter training and mentorship (ASL–English, CDI collaboration)

  • Program development for university-level ASL and interpreting courses

  • Over 15 years of teaching ASL at universities and community colleges, including Lansing Community College and Oakland Community College.

  • Developed curriculum, rubrics, and video-based assignments to support ASL learning and interpreting preparation.

  • Created professional ASL video glossaries in fields such as government, emergency services, and healthcare.

  • Advocate for expanding ASL programs at universities, ensuring students are prepared for careers that involve working with Deaf individuals.

Personal Background:

  • I was born Deaf and began signing at 6 months old through American Sign Language (ASL).

  • I am fluent in multiple signed and spoken languages, including ASL, Italian Sign Language, French Sign Language, English, and Italian.

  • I enjoy traveling, connecting with Deaf communities worldwide, and sharing Deaf culture with students and colleagues.

Teaching & Curriculum Development

  • Taught ASL I–IV at Oakland University and True-Way ASL courses at Michigan State University and Oakland Community College.

  • Designed and assessed signed video assignments using Signing Naturally curriculum.

  • Created hybrid and online course materials integrating Deaf culture, classifiers, and visual grammar.

  • Provided K–12 ASL interventions for DHH students aligned with IEP goals.

Interpreter Training & Mentorship

  • Coordinated interpreters at Bromberg & Associates for medical, legal, and educational settings.

  • Mentored interpreting students in accredited Interpreter Training Programs.

  • Conducted SLPI interviews and fluency ratings for the Michigan Department of Education.
